The South's predominant economic principle before the War of Northern Aggression was "Cotton is King." The South, as it was known around the turn of the 19th century, was solely dependent upon its cotton production. Low prices, unmarketable goods, and over-used land were driving the necessity for slavery and the need for cotton production out. Were it not for a Yankee's ingenuity, the South as we study it now may have been vastly different.…

Congress had no way to collect taxes to pay off pre-war debts. This led to chaos and anarchy when soldiers that hadn't been paid marched on Philadelphia, and Congress had to flee to Princeton New Jersey (Document C). Each State had it's own money, but there was no national money system. Since the money had no value from state to state, the people began to use the barter system of trade. This reduced the amount of trade and importation of goods. There was very little economic progress and growth during this period, even though the population was increasing. (Document B). Self interest of the states and of individuals added to the cause of the problems. For example, John Jay tried to create a treaty with Great Britain that would have been bad for the merchants of the United States but it would have paid off the war debt. His loyalty was not to the people of his state. (Document…

With a shortage of supplies due to lack of industrial bases, the South suffered greatly in the Civil War, ultimately causing their loss. The North’s ability to bring its industry to manufacture supplies allowed it to gain and maintain its dominance over the South. The South, having just 20,000 factories, was no competition for the North, which had 105,000 factories. However, the South at one point did have an opportunity to gain more supplies through foreign aid, which might have caused the Civil War to have a different outcome if the South would have received that aid. Britain and France were willing to give the South money, food, drugs, weapons, and many more supplies. However, the South practiced the institution of slavery, which prevented European aid. Because the middle-classes of France and Britain were against the “peculiar institution”, they chose to side with the North, rather than the South. The South’s deficiency of materials ultimately caused them to lose the Civil War because they were often not prepared for battles and did not have the necessary supplies to compete with the North’s numerous weapons from their large industries.…

In the early years of the 1960s, inflation remained at about the same rate, 2 percent. However, between 1967 and 1969 the percentage of inflation rose to 6 percent. Lyndon Johnson proposed a 10 percent “war tax” to stop the inflation, but in return he had to accept a $6 billion funding cut to his “Great Society” programs. These programs included laws that upheld civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, environmental protection, aid to education, and his "War on Poverty." Even though inflation was stopped, and it was minimal to begin with, there was still public concern for the economy. As with almost every war, there was a downturn in the economy. George McGovern suggested a cut in the military budget due to the “appalling waste of money and manpower” (Doc. H)…
