A. Attention-Getting device: "He was called Sweetness, but to defenders he was anything but. He was an unstoppable force running with the ball, he had great hands as a receiver out of the backfield, and he could throw a devastating shoulder that would knock defenders out of their socks."

B. Thesis / Preview: "Walter Payton is a NFL figure that represents what every NFL running back wishes to achieve, but can only desire. Yet to be surpassed statistically, physically, and mentally, Payton is the most inexpensible running back of all time.

II. Body

A. Walter Payton's career begins in 1975 as a running back for the Chicago Bears.

1. Walter Payton in his first two year.
· As a rookie, Payton ran for 679 yards and established himself as a reliable blocker and return man.
· In 1976 he earned an NFC rushing title when he gained 1,390 yards. Game analysts predict that he might have clenched the league-rushing crown from O.J. Simpson (1,503 yards) had he not been taken out for the second half of the last season game.
2. Walter Payton has the best year of his career in 1977.
· Payton rushes for over 200 yards in the first opening game against the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field.
· Payton sets the NFL record for most rushing yards in a single game with 275 rushing yards in a 10-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings. A 58 yard run late in the 4th quarter sets him up to break the record previously held by O.J....
