Zakat is the Islamic principle of giving a percentage of ones income to poor, deprived, less fortunate Muslims. Muslims strive to be humble in their charitable contributions which is why so many Islamic charities have been established. These organizations make every effort to contribute to the future and well being of Muslims. Three Cups of Tea is the perfect example of how a small humanitarian operation can result in the complete transformation of a small secluded group of people into educated individuals. Because of Greg Mottelson’s efforts, the remote areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan now have over fifty learning institutions for these impoverished kids.

The word Islam is derived from the Arabic word "salaam" which is defined as peace, purity, and submission. One of the main ideas of Islam is that man is ordained by Allah to extend his utmost help and kindness to others no matter what. That’s why it is important for Muslims to find different ways to set up organizations that will benefit the Muslim Ummah in the long run and strengthen them. The unity of humanity is not only in it's origins but also in its ultimate aims. Unfortunately, because of recent events, sometimes these organizations, which are set up to aid people suffering from poverty, get shut down because of ridiculous speculations; such as funding terrorist groups. These allegations are preposterous and inhibiting to the common good of the Muslim community.

Organizations thrive through generous amounts of donations and contributions. In Three Cups of Tea, the author tries various ways of collecting money, from selling all his belongings to writing letters to the wealthy. He found that his sweat finally paid off when people started to take notice of what he was doing and began aiding him in his project
