Barred from the Dream
Since the Founding Fathers created the ideals of the American Dream, much of the original standpoint has been altered. The honest morals of freedom, equality, and justice were turning into the overall want of money. Many strived for this American Dream more than ever. However, not only has the content of the American Dream changed over time; there has also been obstacles prohibiting groups of people to achieve the American Dream. People were unable to obtain their American Dream due to their skin color or religion. The equality set forth by the Founding Fathers was put aside which caused people to be barred from the Dream.
A major group that was unable to obtain their American Dream would be African Americans simply because of their skin color. During the 1960‘s, the discrimination was not as heavy but was still present. Martin Luther King wrote a book called Why We Can’t Wait which described difficulties African Americans went through and why they can not sit around and wait for the hardships to become better. The discrimination was hindering African Americans from being able to go out and have their American Dream which King did not find fair especially as he mentions how both whites and Negros fought on the same land but were still not treated equal.
The Harlem Renaissance Poets also wrote about the undeserved treatment received that caused African Americans to not be able to receive the opportunity to the American Dream. Langston Hughes described how dreams can fade and time is needed in his poems, “I, too Sing America” and “A Dream Deferred.” In “A Dream Deferred,” Hughes description of what happens to a dream can be connected to Walter Jr‘s attitude.
