Ban On Smoking
Should there be a ban on smoking in all public places?
The answer is loud and clear. Smoking should not only be prohibited but strictly prohibited from any public place. People always smoke without concern about their surroundings. Some people think that smoking can liberate their tension and can relax their minds. How about the nonsmokers? Studies have shown that passive or secondhand smoking is more dangerous than actually smoking.
People should only be exposed to harm if they understand the risks and choose to accept them. A complete ban on smoking in public is needed to protect people from passive smoking. People who work in smoky workplaces (e.g. bars)often do not freely choose this sometimes no other jobs are available. In most countries, safety standards do not allow workers to be exposed to unnecessary danger, even if they agree. Workers should not be exposed to other people’s smoke, since they may not have made a free choice to do so.
We live in a civilized world where any harm done to another person will result with a penalty. Let us look at it this way, a man is driving under the influence of alcohol. Everybody knows that his driving is more than likely going to injure or kill an innocent person on the street. So what happens? Due to the danger involved, driving under the influence is prohibited and harsh penalties as a consequence will arise. I know that smoking in public and driving under the influence are two different issues, but after all what are the differences? The drunk driver may cause a crash and injure or kill immediately, whilst the second hand smoker may cause cancer and injure or kill, but only years later. Timing is the only difference, as they are both about the same circumstances, the driver may cause a crash, and the smoker may cause cancer. There is irresponsibility and disregard for others in both instances.
