The following statistical analysis shows the performance of the Bamberger’s Department Store before and after evening opening on Wednesdays.
In this analysis I prefer working with the median instead of working with the mean because outliers e.g. seasonal fluctuations or any other caused outliers won’t influence the analysis that way; one indicator for outliers in this case could be the wide range which is in average $375,027.58.
The average Wednesday sales after the evening opening increased by $244,554 (+38.43%) from $636,286 to $880,840. Also the sales per opening hour increased from $70,698.44 to $73,403.33 which means an averaged rise of 3.83% per opening hour. (See exhibit 1)
As it can be seen in exhibit 2, 76.92% of all Wednesday sales before the evening opening were distributed in the range of $456,731 to $692,513.8; exhibit 3 shows that 81.82% of all sales after Wednesday evening opening are between $707,251 and $994.886.
The above named facts lead to the conclusion that the new, longer opening hours on Wednesday increased the overall sales on that particular day.
Sales of the other days of the week increased as well. The average total sales of the other days rose from $628,712.8 to $642,736.8 which is an absolute increase of $14,024 (+2.23%) per day. By looking more in detail on the average each days sales, it becomes clear that there is an increase on Monday from $542,688 to $560,776.5 (+3.33%), Tuesday from $565,328 to $586,169 (+3.69%), Thursday from $590,230 to $666,706.5 (+12.96%) and Friday from $595,692 to $618,449.5 (+3.82%), but a decrease on Saturdays’ sales by -8.01% from $849,626 to $781,582.5. Regarding the mean percentage of weekly totals sales (see exhibit 5), Saturday used to be the most sales-boosting day at Bamberger’s Department Store with 22.21%. But after the Wednesday evening opening the Saturday dropped to 19.07% (-3.14%) of total weekly sales and Wednesday became the most...
