Assignment #2: The Coca-Cola Company Struggles with Ethical Crisis Case Study

Delineate the ethical issues and dilemmas (as found in Chapter 3) the company faced.

The ethical issues and dilemmas that the Coca-Cola Company has faced since within the last few decades have brought into question the responsibility that a company has to the consumers, financial stakeholders, employee’s and the environment. Companies throughout history have all dealt with ethical issues but Coca-Cola has used these incidents to understand and increase their ethical standards and compete in a morally conscious business environment (Ferrell, Ferrell & Fraedrich, 2011). The types of dilemmas that The Coca-Cola Company has include a contamination scare, racial discrimination allegations, inflated earnings, trouble with distributors, and employees leaking of trade secrets. The company responded to these ethical issues differently in which they seem to never be resolved completely (Ferrell, Ferrell, & Fraedrich, 2011). During the 90’s Coca-Cola consumers were getting sick after drinking some Coca-Cola products. After the first incidents the Coca-Cola Company activated a regional recall where the sicknesses in the regions where it was happening, but that wasn’t enough for the area affected. The government of Belgium ordered that all Coca-Cola products be recalled. The government recall escalated with other countries such as Luxembourg and the Netherlands following suite and recalling all the Coca-Cola products as well. It took days for the company to find the culprit of what was causing the sickness. Coca-Cola’s timeliness to formally respond to the sicknesses caused uproar with the media and the public. This ethical issue here is that consumers of their product are the most important part of the business (Ferrell, Ferrell, & Fraedrich, 2011). Coca-Cola has an obligation to their

    The company’s unethical behavior started years ago when the secret formula of the Coca-Cola drink was in question. Coca-Cola, the world 's best-selling soft drink, once contained cocaine, and it is still flavored with a non-narcotic extract from the coca, the plant from which cocaine is derived (May,1988). Some people believe that this action by the company had a main reason behind it, which is the case when most unethical behavior occurs. The Coca-Cola Company’s idea of creating customer loyalty was aimed more at addicting the customer to the product over developing a relationship between the customer and the company (Zarate, 2012). By addicting the customers to the soft drink, revenues will have increased dramatically and demand for the product would have always been extraordinary. This was a very unethical behavior on the company’s part due to the fact that people of all ages were drinking the product and the company was producing a product that could have had potential harm to the society. The impact of cocaine on society can be seen in those that use the substance families, communities, and workplaces. As the public began to turn against cocaine, because its adverse effects and addictive properties were discovered, the Coca-Cola Company eventually switched the soft drink’s formula. If the company did not switch the soft drink’s formula it would have impacted the demand of the product, resulting in less sales revenue and would have hindered the growth of the company.     Corporate reputation plays a very integral part within organizational performance and social responsibility. Either one significant incident or several incidents can influence the perception of a company’s image and reputation held by its stakeholders and customers. This may have a lasting effect for many, many years. Coca-Cola’s (Coke) reputation has been tarnished because of the numerous allegations of unethical behavior and lack of social responsibility mainly in the international market. In 2000, Coke failed to place in Fortune’s top ten “America’s Most Admired Companies”. The following year it vanished from the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” as honored by Business Ethics magazine (p. 409). Along with losing its good standing in the corporate world, Coke has also experienced some instability in its financial performance. While in the early part of 2000 Coke maintained a sound balance sheet (p. 416), its growth proved to be a little more stagnant by 2009 with shares fluctuating between $59 and $37 per share (p. 410).
