ASSESSMENT OF THE PERFORMANCE OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION GRADUATES IN THE INDUSTRY: CASE STUDY OF GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE SECTORS.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1. BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY
The University of Malawi comprises of five constituent colleges with a central
administration situated in Zomba. The colleges are Bunda College of Agriculture in
Lilongwe, Chancellor College in Zomba, Kamuzu College of Nursing which has two campuses; one in Lilongwe and the other in Blantyre, College of Medicine and The Malawi Polytechnic in Blantyre.
In the early 60’s the University of Malawi was the only institution of higher learning in the country. These colleges were established according to the needs and values of the country. For example Bunda College produces agriculturalists, Kamuzu college of Nursing produces nurses, College of Medicine produces doctors, Chancellor College was opened mainly to train secondary school teachers in linguistic and science subjects and The Malawi Polytechnic was opened to produce graduates who could work in industries such as workshop supervisors, administrators and accountants both in government and private sectors. As such ‘’University of Malawi has been entrusted with the responsibility of providing highly trained personnel required both in government and industry, carry out research and provide leadership in all aspects of national development’’ (University of Malawi, 1989)

1.2.1. BUNDA COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE
Bunda college of Agriculture was established to stimulate the economic growth of the country. The graduates that the college produces have the knowledge on Agriculture so they are able to plant good farming techniques in the world of Agriculture to local farmers.
