Art Criticism – The Creation of Adam
In this painting God is depicted as an elderly white-bread man wrapped in a swirling cloak while Adam, is in the lower left and is completely nude while sitting on a large boulder. God’s right arm is extended to impact the spark of life from his own finger into Adam whose left arm is extended in pose mirroring God. Adam appears to be completely nude sitting on what seems to be a rocky hill God and Adam’s finger are not touching which gives the impression that God is reaching out to Adam and Adam is receiving. God is surrounded by many females; they are wrapped around his whole body. Many of the elements work to together to enhance Michelangelo’s artwork. When looking at the painting the eye is immediately drawn to the fingers almost touching were the breath of life is transmitted. Having a small gap in-between the fingers leaves tension. The lines leading up to the focal point are actual organic lines and organic shapes that are rounded and flowing. Through the body of God and Adam you can really depict the movement occurring. The colours used make the painting more neutral and more calm and relaxed. The stimulated texture found in this painting makes the bodies look lifelike. The space is not very deep. Many principles work together to create such a great piece of artwork by Michelangelo such as the asymmetrical balance, the painting contains Adam in the bottom left corner and God in the top right corner, having on figure on rather side of the painting balances out the painting.     Critics suggest that the way Michelangelo depicts the prophet Ezekiel as strong yet stressed, determined yet unsure is symbolic of Michelangelo’s sensitivity to the intrinsic complexity of the human condition. The most famous Sistine Chapel ceiling painting is the emotion-infused The Creation of Adam, in which God and Adam outstretch their hands to one another. Michelangelo continued to sculpt and paint until his death, although he increasingly worked on architectural projects as he aged: His work from 1520 to 1527 on the interior of the Medici Chapel in Florence included wall designs, windows and cornices that were unusual in their design as well as proportions and introduced startling variations on classical forms. Michelangelo also designed the iconic dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Among his other masterpieces are Moses The Last Judgment and Day, Night, Dawn and Dusk. From the 1530s on, Michelangelo wrote poems; about 300 survive.     Another work painted by him in the same Chapel, The Tribute Money, (Fig 5) all the characters have different postures within different scenes. Viewers can very easily tell the storyline by just looking at the fresco. Naturalism is certainly the key for narrative story to Masaccio, and it helps him to transmit the emotional impact immediately with those realistic postures. Especially back then, not too many people read, thus a visual emotional connection is definitely a better option to inform majority of people what is the meaning of those scenes. On the other hand, Masolino’s Temptation of Adam and Eve is set against a dark background, which was well depicted before, but it had disappeared over the years. The two characters are parallel to each other. They almost display the same gesture and pose. Both of them are looking at opposite direction and showing a three-quarter view of the face. The body languages for the characters in both frescos reflect the understanding of nature human body studies. Accounting to Lilian H. Zirpolo, who wrote in The A to Z of Renaissance Art, Masaccio’s figures show his advanced understanding of human anatomy, while Masolino's Adam and Eve is quite simple in poses, even though he had studied anatomy.6 In this case; notwithstanding, Masolino was skilled with painting human figures, his Adam and Eve could be any nude characters, if there are no other symbols in the painting. According to the book of Acts, on the way to Damascus, Saul the Pharisee fell to the ground when he heard the voice of Christ saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' Saul then temporarily lost his sight. It was reasonable to assume that Saul had fallen from a horse as he was a man of importance. Caravaggio paintings were very close to what the Bible describes.     In this painting, you see around 60 Greek philosophers arranged in a very large hall. The philosophers are talking to each other, discussing theories or mathematical queries. It symbolizes philosophic thinking and the search for truth. On the wall you can see paintings and statues. He has used contour lines with domes and actual line with figures.     This statue in particular portrays different examples of humanism. The statue of David originated from a biblical story of David and Goliath; he is considered a hero and champion. It was his greatest victory and an ideal situation for a human.     He was an ingenious innovator who surpassed the skills of many artists. After the Pope presented an idea of how the chapel's ceiling should be painted, the artist boldly decided to expand on what he thought was a mundane design. When reviewing the details of each panel, you can clearly see the artist's frustration with the church and in some instances Pope Julius II specifically. For example, Zechariah. Note the similarities between the prophet (Links to an external site.)and this portrait of Pope Julius II (Links to an external site.) painted by the artist Raphael. Moreover, pay attention to the hand gesture (Links to an external site.)of the overlooking putti. The cherub seems to be showing the prophet "the fig", a signal of great disrespect. Another example of Michelangelo's tense relationship with the Pope can be seen in the panel which includes Jeremiah; located directly opposite Zechariah (please see image below). The artist not only depicts the prophet showing the left side of his face while seated. The Italian word for left is sinistra, which stems from the Latin word sinister; meaning harmful, menacing, and evil.
