My late grandfather was part of the Indian Regiment Army stationed in Singapore when the Japanese attacked South East Asia early 1942. After the war he decided to quit the Army and married his bride which was arranged by my late great grandfather. The British government granted him citizenship for his time in service and so he decided to leave India and settle down in Singapore. When my father came of age my grandfather approached his best friend to speak about a union between both my parents. Soon after, they married. Living in Singapore ever since I was born, I have been exposed to Western Culture that I have considered myself more Singaporean than Indian.
Late last year, I returned to my motherland, Incredible India. My cousin invited my family and I to witness his wedding in Punjab. Somehow my parents tried to psychologically prepare me for the kind of changes that I would experience. After 12 hours of travelling, we arrived at our destination. It was at that point in time that my mum blurted out that my cousin’s wedding was an arranged one. I was very surprised, almost in a state of shock to discover that a union of this sort existed in this very day and age.
I asked my parents about the significance of arranged marriages and it seems that arranged marriages have been an integral part of the Indian culture for many centuries and many consider this practice a central fabric of Indian society, reinforcing the social, economic, geographic, and the historic significance of India. Furthermore, arranged marriages help to maintain the social satisfaction system in the society.
I also learnt that my uncle had spent about a year searching for a bride for their son. The girl’s parents had also spent just as much time in making themselves look good and advertising through word of mouth.
