Applying Maslows Theory
Applying Maslow’s Theory As a teacher in a large urban child care center, in which the children arrive around 7:00 a.m., I would begin the morning by saying good morning to the children and getting the run-down of how their night went at home from the parents and hugging each child to let them know they are important to me. I would then let the children have free play until around 7:30 a.m. to make sure all of the children are there that will be there for the day before beginning the morning circle time. As the children arrive we will do potties and make sure every child is comfortable. At 7:30 a.m. I would begin morning circle time and this is when I would sing the good morning song and welcome the children to class as well as do the calendar, weather, days of the week, the months, and numbers. Once this is all finished with I would do a few fingerplays or read a book to the children to draw their attention to the learning environment. The children would then be sent to centers for small manipulatives and math/science. There would also be a center open for “library” for the children who want to read or read to other children. Each child will have free range of where he or she would like to play for the center time allowed and then about an hour later we would be served morning snack. After morning snack, I would potty the children again and get them ready and cleaned up from snack to go outside for morning recess. After morning recess the children would come in and there would be a diverse variety of toys for the children to play with and a center set up for creative art. Each child will get a turn to make something for their parents/guardian to take home to them. After about an hour of this, it is then time for circle time to draw the children’s attention once again. As we are doing circle time, lunch then arrives and we send the children to wash their hands and sit at the table. The children eat their lunch and as they eat lunch the teacher is putting out cots

I provide a positive relationship with the child through daily routines and interactions allowing growth in in their development of self and others. Each morning I ensure that I greet each child and parent when they arrive. In greeting the child I will always address the child by his/her name and encourage the other children to say good morning. I feel this gives the child and parent a sense of trust and security for a safe and secure environment and this acknowledgment makes the child feel special and welcome in the class. In the mornings I also have open centers where the children can go around and greet the other student and to move and work at their own pace. I also find some way to praise the class and each child daily. I provide opportunities for the children to always feel successful and proud of themselves. All children have different rates of development and different personalities. Knowing this can help us be patient. I show children that I really care about them by accepting each child as an individual. I help children with developing social skills, Self- control, problem-solving skills, and the ability to act independently.…

In chapter 5, Duhigg described a well-known experiment that was performed by scientists at Stanford that tested the willpower of a group of four-year-old children. The children were offered a deal. They could eat a marshmallow right away or they could have two marshmallows if they put off eating the marshmallow a few minutes after the researcher left the room. Certain kids managed to disregard the marshmallow, while some gave in and ate it as soon as the researcher left. Years later, the scientists pursued many of the marshmallow study’s participants. The participants were already in high school and they were asked about their grades, ability to sustain friendships, and their capability to deal with problems. It turns out that the four-year-olds…

The needs that appeared to be most urgent and necessary were the Physiological needs; Chuck Noland’s actions agreed with Maslow’s Hierarchy when we got on the island, he immediately sought food. The items that were already present on the island were Coconuts, Rocks, Sticks, and Palmetto Leaves. They met the needs of Physiological and Safety. The items that Chuck Noland used from the FedEx boxes were Clothing, Volleyball, Ice Skates, and VHS tapes. The needs that these items met were Physiological and Love. The movie Cast Away, Chuck Noland was stranded on an island. He was stuck there for about four years. As the years went by, he became more aware of how to survive. He knew how to find food, how to make shelter, and how to keep himself company. He used his volleyball that was in a FedEx box as a friend to talk to. He used leaves and sticks and sunlight to build a fire. He used porta potty as shelter. He also used anything for food. He was the only one who survived on that island from all…

Responsive to participant needs. On their first day in our program, I make every effort to me4et and greet our clients, the parents as well as the children. I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations, or modifications to better service their children. Before the child enters the classroom, I make sure they know they are included. I post a welcome sign for each new child and their cubby is already labeled so they know where to store their belongings. Once the child has entered the classroom, I take another child and introduce them and then we all take a tour of the classroom. This gives us a time to get to know each other, I can find out their likes and dislikes, observe their interactions with other children, and begin to plan their development.…

As a professional I attend regular trainings both in and out of work. Some training is provided for me by my employer, while others I seek out on my own. In June I attended training for 2 weeks before children started attending class. These trainings focused on areas such as health, routines and transitions, environments, goals/objectives and school readiness. One way I apply these trainings is by setting a routine in the classroom and remembering to abide by it, while allowing some flexibility as the children need it. It is important to keep a routine so that the children know what to expect. A routine helps children to stay focused…

As a childcare provider, I help children gain a sense of self by labeling their cubbies with their photos, names, and birthdates. I help them recognize and pronounce their names. I include activities and books about different cultures and different home environments. I provide activities that they are capable of completing and materials that are age appropriate, I encourage children to share stories about their family. I ask them about their family, culture, and gender, I respect and recognize their emotional and physical needs. I help them with activities if my help is needed. I show empathy toward their feelings.
