Although Riordan has been successful with its new integrated accounting cycle system, it is always crucial and essential to continually improve Riordan's information system in order to capture competitive advantage and deliver leading products and services to its customers. The Learning Team B (LTB), an outside consulting group, is hired to study Riordan's systems and to assist in designing a system framework that will provide controls over Riordan's integrate accounting information system and its application software.
LTB has completed a qualified study and analysis on Riordan's systems and concluded that Riordan's information systems between operating entities are incompatible. To resolve these challenging issues, Riordan needs to adopt a systematic approach for future design and development of the company's existing systems. LTB has proposed a system development life cycle (SDLC) with four phases performed within a linear pattern. Figure B illustrates Riordan's SDLC.
Plan and Investigate: LTB will identify problems and importance, define scope and requirements, e.g. Riordan needs to establish a control to optimize its existing inventory processes to ensure availability and accessibility of inventory. Budget procurements and timelines are all discussed with the management as well.
Analysis: LTB will document the current systems, e.g. current data integrity and consolidation of existing data are not effectively managed due to incompatibility of information systems from the company's different operating plants. TLB will run SWOT analyses and develop new system requirements based on the assessments, e.g. a real-time inventory report is necessary.
Design: LTB has proposed to the company's management about forming a designing team comprised a mix of inside and outside professionals including the company's accounting function for development of new systems and subsystems. This team will be responsible...
