Among The Hidden Margaret Peterson haddix

Zidong Weng ESLDO Oct. 16 Bolotenko
The book I read is Among the hidden wich is wrote by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This book was published by Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing in 1998. It is a science-fiction book wich has about 150 pages. My first impression of this book is that it is a sad story because the cover page is made up by cool tone. The story happens in the future which starts with Luke’s birthday in Luke’s home. With a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family’s farm, he is no longer allowed to go outside. There is a law about each family can only have tow children. Luke has lived his entire life in hiding because he is a shadow child, a third child forbidden by the population police. Luke admires his brothers so much because they can go to school and play with friends out side. This setting makes me feeling mysterious and depressive. Until one day, he find out there is an other shadow child in his neighbour’s family. She is Jen, the creator of a chat room for shadow children chatting with each other. They become friends soon after they meet. Jen organizes a rally wich hundreds of shadow children are going to protest the government’s population law, but Luck does not participate in the rally that day because of fear. After the rally day, Luck can not contact with Jen for a week. He is so anxious that he breaks in jen’s house. He meets Jen’s dad in the house who tells him a appealing news ---- Jen and other shadow children were killed by population police. Then, Jen’s dad helps Luck escaping from population police’ chase. Finally, they achieve to make a fake I.D for Luck. On this story, the main conflict is person versus society. All the shadow children are illegal, but they never stop the struggle for freedom.
The two main character for the story are Luck and Jen. Luck is a small-bone and soft looking

The author of The Perils of Social Reading, Neil Richards, writes about the issues of updating an old privacy act that could interfere with the way we view the world through our reading and watching movies. The VPPA or Video Privacy Protection Act is an old act from 1988 that the House of Representatives wants to update to make it so when a Facebook or Netflix user watches or reads something on the internet, it is automatically posted to your Facebook feed. Richards brings to the attention of the reader the issues with this because many people are self-conscious about what they read and would rather not have people know. The article…

There are several similarities between China’s one child law and Among the Hidden. China had to put the one child law on because they had limited food. China can now have 2 children but it used to be one. In the book Among the Hidden you can have 2 children. In China if you have more than 2 children you have to pay a fine or the extra child is euthanized. They way that some people avoid this in China is that they are rich and they can pay the fine. In Among the Hidden the Barons pay the fine or they get a fake I.D. In China the extra child doesn’t get an education or an I.D. If they don’t have an education they can’t get a job or have health care. In Among the Hidden they have to hide and they get no education, in conclusion I think that it…

The book that I decided to read and then read all of is a book called Invisible by Pete Hauptmann, the guy who wrote it. It is 176 pages long, which is shorter than some of the other books on the list, and there are several pictures which also helps, and it is about a loser named Douglas Fancypants Hanson who likes model trains, naked girls, and fires. There are no dragons or things like that, but he does have a really cranky cat named Mr. Whiskers. Doug has an actually cool friend named Andy Morrow who plays soccer and buys him Butterfingers. But there is a mystery because why would a cool guy like Andy want to be friends with a loser like Doug? Personally I wouldn’t have anything to do with Doug because for one thing I suspect he smells weird.…

Common sense seems to dictate that humans should stick with what they know. This seemingly includes that education and media should stay the same. The popular saying, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it” demonstrates this. However, our society demands open-mindedness to revolutionize education and media to institute a more involved level from the public.…

Kings Secret Exposed?? What’s the gossip this week? Rumour has it that the king has donkey ears. From a source, we have info that our king, King, Midas had a little argument with Apollo, God of the sun. Big mistake! We all heard about the sing-off between Pan and Apollo. Apollo won but our king couldn't accept that. We don't blame Apollo for being mad about it. Witness say Midas called his singing “trashy and out of tune”. Even worse it was his own barber that spread his secret. Midas can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble this week can he? Last week he had to beg Dionysus to reverse his own wish.Clearly our king needs to get his attitude right. We think its all very #scandalous.…

If a person is born ignorant, to guardians who were born ignorant and raised under misleading information, in a society that encourages ignorance, and inevitably dies under the influence of ignorance. They died a normal person, because ignorance was their social construct of living. The indoctrination into this matrix can be called education; brainwashing, can be called entertainment. The criminals and lawbreakers so condemned by this society, can actually be found in its leaders. The lies these trusted leaders tell are undisputedly accepted as the truth. The person born and molded into a situation like this never truly had thoughts of their own. I never questioned anything growing up I was taught to be the truth. I know realize that it something’s…

Regarding Hinchey's chapter 3, after reading the statement of "What is best for kids?", my mind went rolling to experiences in my school. "Whose kids exactly are we talking about?" was the other question that could be answered differently in each school house. I had a general idea of the effects of poverty on the education of children from impoverished backgrounds, but it is still interesting to read such information as a reminder of the wrong assumptions we as teachers could have, such as lacking computers with Internet access or how the parents cannot help with their child's homework because of their own low literacy levels.…

Rowlandson did a great job expressing her religion, but so did Cotton Mather. In “The Wonders of the Invisible World”, Mather’s runs into problems in his colony with things such as witchcraft. Mathers wanted to protect his Puritan beliefs and did not want evil teachings to corrupt others religious views. Mathers believed in the persecution of this witches to keep the Puritans and their believes safe. Mathers had a strong religious background and was a preacher. As a preacher his job was to protect his church from the devil that was presenting itself in people that were thought to be witches. He thought he was doing God's work by destroying them. “An army of devils is horribly broke in upon the place which is the center, and after a sort, the first born of our English settlement.” (page 329) I find it appalling that Cotton Mather's goes on to explain some of the executions of these witches. The…

The late 1600s bridged a time in the New World where religion was highly valued and superstitions, established from a previous time, ran rampant. Over several centuries ago, from the 1300s-1600s, England was experiencing its own type of witchcraft craze as it went through the process of executing thousands of people for their supposed misdeeds. After putting into place, appealing, reformatting and reenacting various acts all of which, in their own manner, banned supernatural acts and resulted in the death of many, England had finally seemed to move past this elongated obsession, just in time to pass it onto their fellow Englishmen in the New World. Due to the past exposures of hysteria and the already traumatic events occurring in the area,…
