This bill concerns the National Minimum Drinking Act. This law proposes that states must change the minimum drinking level to 21 years of age or the states will lose 10% of their funds. Since the states do not want to lose their funds from the government, the states will enforce the law.
There has been this debate since the Prohibition, on whether alcohol consumption should be legal or not. In 1919, the 18th amendment was approved and prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating substances. This amendment was later repealed with the ratification of the 21th amendment in 1933.
There have been many supporters and non-supporters in the current debate. One group for keeping the drinking age at 21 is called MADD- Mothers against Drunk Driving. Their goal is to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of alcohol and to help teenagers with drinking problems. Groups for include LAFAA (Legalize Alcohol for all Adults) and SADD (Students against Drunk Driving). These groups aim to reduce the drinking age to 18 to reduce the occurrences of binge drinking in many campuses. Binge drinking is a serious problem among college campuses. Men in America, aged 18-21, often feel cheated that they are unable to legally drink, but can be tried as an adult.
I strongly believe that the drinking age must be lowered to 18. When a person is 18, they have officially become an “adult” and have all the rights of being an adult. They are responsible for themselves. Many people are upset that they can be drafted by the country and are required to give up their lived for their country but they cannot have a beer. Also, as a direct result of human nature, rebellious teenagers under the age of 21 see alcohol drinking as a rebellious activity. “In some ways, it perversely encourages drinking because it made it a rebellious thing to do" says Jona Goldberg, an editor for the National Review.
