Alcohol Effects

Do you know anyone who has been severely injured or even died from a motor vehicle accident involving a drunk driver? I do and I’m sure many of you do too. Recently my friends were in a car accident involving a drunk driver. This was, in fact, not too long ago. They went down to Minneapolis to go to a concert and on their way home they were t-boned into a wall. Although the car was totaled, my friends were luckily alright. Unfortunately I have also had a friend that was killed by a drunk driver also. The drunk driver was my age, young and reckless. Now that you know why this is so important to me, there are three topics I would like to discuss: drinking in general, underage drinking, and most importantly drunk driving.

Underage drinking is a big problem in our society. As far as underage drinking goes statistically, according to the US Dept. Health and Human Services about 41% of teens ages 12-17 have consumed alcohol sometime in their lives about 21% are still currently consuming it. In violent crimes that that been recorded by the police were alcohol was a factor, about 9 % of the offenders and nearly 14% of the victims were under the age of 21. Stated in the Greater Dallas Council on alcohol and drug abuse.
Underage drinking effects our society so much yet we don’t hear much about it. We need to be aware of the fact that underage drinking   should not be taken lightly. Authorities on college campuses are beginning to crack down on this, because underage drinking is increasing very rapidly. In fact an estimated 13% of college campuses reported on campus arrests just for drinking violations; not including DUI. As reported by Fast Stats.
Alcohol is more involved in our society than most of us think.
