In today’s society social media has advanced in so many different ways. Society used to be just a one way street where people just read the newspaper, did research through books or even watch the news on television. These days societies have the internet and everything digital that can help with learning such as social network sites.…

In today’s society, billions of people across the world are accessing the internet multiple times a day. Why wouldn’t they? Many people have the internet on their smart phones, and at the touch of a button can check their email, their Twitter, their Facebook, their bank account balance, you name it. Any social networking site or application, actually, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Youtube or something similar, it seems to easily suck up hours of a person’s day. Teens and children are accessing these sites while at school, and as soon as they get home from school. Adults are accessing these sites while at work and are often choosing to spend time checking their “walls” or profiles rather than spending time with their loved ones. There is no doubt that there are certain social benefits to these sites, many people say we need them to keep in touch with friends. However, the benefits do not outweigh the problems they cause. Social networking causes children and adults to be lazy and overweight, less productive at school and work, distracted, and, ironically, causes them to be anti-“social.” For these reasons, social networking is bad for society and should not be used.…
When presented with the topic of Social Media in Schools, we were asked to evaluate the positive uses of it and why it could and should be used in the classroom. Throughout research we have maintained the opinion that the use of social media would be more of an asset to the learning process than a hindrance. Social media allows for a door to the ever changing world called the future, which even by today's standards most interpersonal communication takes place online or in text. Social Media can enable you to engage in a two-way conversation with a community of colleagues, and stay on top of breaking news and trends. (John Hartford Foundation 1) To some people, its the only way for them to keep track of what is going on in the world, its their only information source.…

Students can use these social networking sites to discuss educational topics .They are developing a positive attitude towards using technology systems, editing and customizing content and thinking about online design and layout. There has been a lot of recent debate on the benefits of social networking tools and software in education. While there are good points on either side of the debate, there remains the essential difference in theoretical positioning. Most conventional educational environments are "Objectivist" in nature and highly structured in terms of students progress and choice. Social networking essentially requires a less controlled, user-generated environment, which challenges conventional views of the effective "management" of teaching and learning. Therefore, can social networking both as an instructional concept and user skill be integrated into the conventional approaches to teaching and learning? Do the skills developed within a social networking environment have value in the more conventional environments of learning?…
Social networking site have many benefit to communication. First, by using Facebook and Twitter, contact with others become easier. People could talk to people far away from them anytime they want. Another advantage of using social media is that it benefit to study. People in the same class can shared e-books or other sources through the internet which reduce the time in searching information. And with the help of modern app such as line, student can discuss their homework at home instead of finding a place to gathered. What's more social media is worked as an invisible bridge which connect the word together. McLuhan described in his book Understanding Media (1964) that" the globe has been contracted into a village by electric technology"( McLuhan,1964:6). And now it is been even smaller by the development of social media.…

Within the past 20 years there has been a rapid change and update in technology. In comparison to how machinery, computers and other functions were in 1990 to now 2014 is completely different. Nowadays, there were various type of social media that could be very useful for a learning platform. But, I would like to point my perspective on the most popular social media in Malaysia which is Facebook. An overview from Malaysian Digital Association (MDA) found that the number of registered users of the social networking site Facebook is 8 million people. This makes the social networking site Facebook as the most record number of registered users in Malaysia (Daily News Online, 21 November 2010). This amount is indirectly implied that Facebook is the most popular social networking site in Malaysia. From a student perspective, I think the use of social media as a learning platform in tertiary level education would be very useful…

A lot of criticism has been leveled at social networking sites and the effect it has on the way students process and retain information, as well as how distracting it can be. However, social networking sites offer plenty of opportunities for learning and interactivity, and if you take a moment to think about it, it’s not too hard to see how students benefit from using social media. As younger generations use such technology in the classroom, they remake the educational landscape. Students are experiencing the world through more than just books and assignments; they are learning and adapting to the world using a relatively new form of communication.…
