Accuracy of data input is important. For each of the following situations, I will list not only the situation itself, but the best method for data input regarding each situation in detail:
Printed questionnaires:
The best method for data input is the computer keyboard. Batch keying is one of the oldest data capturing techniques. This process is very practical for high-volume entry where fast production is a requirement. No editing procedures are necessary but there must be a high degree of confidence in the editing program. (Statistics Canada, 2006)
Telephone surveys:
According to the Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development, the best method for data input when conducting telephone surveys is using a 21 station CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) laboratory.
Bank checks:
Universal point-of-sale device can include a two-dimensional imager for inputting not only machine-readable symbol data, but also alphanumeric text, images, etc. “As a result, the two-dimensional imager can input data to a processor from various
documents, such as lottery tickets, drivers' licenses, personal bank checks.” (US Patent 6199044 , 2001)
Retail Tags:
From personal experience, I can confidently state that Bar Code Scanners are the best data input tools for retail tags.
Long Documents:
“ Long documents should be scanned and converted to computer readable data by optical character recognition if the document already exists in an appropriate format Documents being created for the first time could be entered with dictation software that has been trained to the writer's voice” (Unknown, 2007)
