Accomplishing Goals
Donnaree Allison

I have always been told the choices I make now are going to determine my future. Everyone goes through a struggle and I have had my fair share, but no matter how hard I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted to succeed. I was struggling in High School and decided to give up. It didn’t take long for me to realize this is not what I wanted. By dropping out of High School I wasn’t succeeding. I thought to myself how could I accomplish any of the goals I set for myself? So I decided to enroll in Job Corps and attained my G.E.D within two months. That wasn’t enough. I wanted to go to college. Choosing a college was hard. Then it dawned on me what better college than the one my mom attended, and so I chose Monroe. Goal is a very important subject for me. I have already planned and completed some of my goals, which improved me a lot, however, my long time goals in the future are not easy as the past; it will take a longer time to complete and will be the most challenging mission for me, but with determination and hard work I will pull through. The first thing I am doing is complete my education. I plan to put my best foot forward excelling through each college course. I want to absorb as many learning opportunities and experiences as possible. In conclusion no matter how old or young one is; it is never too late or too early to start working towards an educational goal in becoming a college graduate! Like My Mother always said it is only the lack of belief in ourselves that stops us from achieving those things and it is only through our own understanding, ability and perseverance that we see them become realities until then, they are little more than visions in a crystal ball, with no chance of development.

When I graduated high school in 2013 I attended a community college in Pennsylvania for a semester. My thought on college in high school were “I don’t really want to continue my education for another four years”. That was until my high school counselor called me to her office seeing that I didn’t apply for schools. She explained that I wouldn’t be able to get a good job or ever own a house without a college degree, so that fear pushed me into continuing my education. My parents were the same way they also told me “most jobs would hire a college graduate over a high school graduate”. That was the final push towards the path of…

Now I had an important decision to make: let cognitive dissonance take over and curb my toward what the epitome of success had to offer, or realize that maybe this place wasn't for me. I want to be in a place open to ideas with plenty of classes from which to choose, I want to study what I dream about and, most importantly, I want to be my own person, not one in a crowd of many. I decided to revise my previous idea of what a successful life meant and do what I felt would prepare me for who I wanted to be as an adult; I canceled my application and explained to my family why I took such a drastic step. On my own time, I figured out who I wanted to be, even if that meant not having the fortune and fame that came with stereotypical success, and this made me feel like a new person. I know I will not regret my decision and that my future is going in the proper direction for me to reach my goal: to study microbiology throughout college and graduate school, and work at the CDC, a dream completely different from the one I started with, but also one so much more true to my…

I knew I was going to be going to some university to pursue a degree, but I didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. It wasn’t until I took AP Computer Science in 11th grade that I decided that pursing a degree in Computer Science was the right thing for me. This type of work was something that I greatly enjoyed and through computer science I would be able to solve problems in creative ways. When applying for colleges I didn’t get into the University of Florida. This was my top pick and for months I was looking forward to the possibility of attending there. We lived in a neighborhood where generations of families continue to grow and expand; yet very few ever leave the boundaries of East Los Angeles. Much to my family’s surprise, I made it through high school and became the first in my family to graduate with a high school degree. After graduation, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do next. I began working and attended various community colleges off and on during this time. However, it wasn’t until I began attending East Los Angeles College that I began to feel I was headed towards my evolving definition of success.…

I believe students should enter college right after high school. I have are very strong opinion about this topic. We all have goals and its better now than later. As well it’s a great learning experience outside of getting a degree, you learn independent. Having to make decision in life basically depends on the individual and their situation. We can say that we want to go to college whether it is now or in the future. I can say that, for myself had I known what I know this day in time my choices would have been different. My point of view about this topic is that I know that before we graduate from high school that we are already getting yourself prepared for life goals. I think it is very important to plan for the future even if you may need to give yourself a year to continue education. Just look at it this way, if you were to go to college after high school where do you think that you will be in the next five years. Hopefully proud of yourself that you have applied yourself and became successful. On another note what if you waited a year, where do you think that you will be. Well I have to honestly say in my situation, starting college at the of thirty-seven its more challenging and I think that had I attended college after high school, maybe it would have been less stressful. The reason I say this, I know that my learning mode would have been fresher due to me coming straight from high school. I believe that it makes you lazy and can push you back things more complicated for the long run. . So with this being said there are advantages and disadvantages but as an individual I think that getting yourself prepared for what you want in life that it’s very important to make the best decision for you.…
