If you are a parent, it is obvious that you would be concerned about letting your children watch television without any restrictions. Some parents argue that their children are enough to avoid bad influences. However, we should focus on the fact that violence in media causes serious problems. Therefore, we should find a way to limit the violence in media.
Parents didn’t realize how the violent television programs are. Today young children can’t imagine about life without media. According to a study by the American Psychological Association (APA), the average child will watch 8,000 murders and 100,000 acts of violence on television before finishing elementary school. Although we assume children can distinguish between reality and fantasy, abundant violence makes children aggressive and immune to the sight of death. In Korea, a high school student killed his friend. Many people were shocked that the killer watched the violence in the movie “Friend” 41 times and learned how to kill. Violence media made one young person a social outcast.
Parents have to recognize that children’s thinking, attitude, and manners are influenced indirectly by violence in the media. Today most of the media gives messages such as “Violence is the way to be a hero” and “Kill or to be killed”. Young people might think they achieve everything with violence and try to do it. They are not adult enough to distinguish between reality and fantasy.
Parents must save their children from violence in the media. First of all, parents should not put television and computer in children’s room. It is better to set it up in the living room or in parent’s room where parents can see what children are doing. Parents are also concerned about the programs which their children watch. They should limit the amount of time their children spend watching television.
