Every year, 46 million abortions are performed throughout the world (CBR). Abortion is the birth of an embryo or fetus before it is developed enough to survive, especially when caused intentionally. People who have a decided opinion on abortion are categorized into two categories: pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice is when people believe strongly for abortion, and pro-life is when people believe strongly against abortion. Roe V. Wade was the case that changed the laws on abortion that are enforced today. Current opinions on abortion are based on the beliefs of pro-choice organizations, the beliefs of pro-life activists, and the historical findings of the infamous Roe V. Wade case.
At the time the Constitution was adopted, abortions were openly advertised and commonly performed. However, in the mid-to-late 1800’s, many states began passing laws that made abortions illegal (NAF). Women were then forced to attempt abortions either by themselves, or have an illegal abortion done because professional, legal abortions were no longer legal. By 1965, all fifty states banned abortion a small number of states allowing exceptions (NAF). Several thousand women were harmed as a result of illegal abortion. Currently, abortion is legal in all fifty states.
Next, the pro-choice belief is more common today due to the legalization of abortion. Most people who categorize themselves as pro-choice believe that the fetus is not a human, that every child should be a wanted child, and that a woman should be able to control her own body (Pro-life or Pro-choice). Pro-choice is the belief that women have a choice in what to do with the early-life of their fetus. Pro-life believes strongly against abortion, and does not agree with the current laws permitting what the call an awful crime.
