Abortion – a Woman’s Choice
Giving birth is maybe one of the greatest things in woman’s life and this feeling can only be described by those who had the chance to become mothers. As we all know, however, every action in the world has its counteraction. In this sense we can consider abortion as the counteraction of giving birth. The question about whether a woman should be allowed to make an abortion or not, still remains one of the actual matters of our society. Many discussions have been carried on and while in some parts of the world firmly decisions have been taken, yet in others this remains an open-ended question. Abortion is a very controversial subject. Many are pro, many are against it. There are various arguments supporting both sides. Some people consider abortion as dangerous act and on social ground it is also regarded as sinful, immoral and irresponsible deed which can easily threaten our society. That is why it is considered as something, mankind should put a ban on. “On the other hand, a pregnancy may prevent women from keeping their jobs, from feeding their families, and from serving others in ways they consider necessary and appropriate” (Social Issues). Pregnancy and childbirth may determine a woman’s future, her education and life as a whole. In this sense the right to an abortion allows a woman to make her own choice, to have control over her body and sometimes it turns out to be the right thing to do.
A May 2005 survey examined attitudes toward abortion in 10 European countries, asking polltakers whether they agreed with the statement, "If a woman doesn't want children, she should be allowed to have an abortion". The highest level of approval was 81% (in the Czech Republic); the lowest was 47% (in Poland). (Abortion/Public Opinion)
