I. Abolitionist activity from the 1700s
II. Most political efforts were toward COMPROMISE, rather than principle
III. 1807 Outlawed foreign slave trade
IV. Abolitionist remained a minority in the US/ only during the Civil War did majority approve it.
V. Anti-slavery movement led by freed slaves, white middle class women (early feminists), ministers and volatile reformists (Many saw these as fringe and nuts)
VI. Working class whites opposed abolition because freed slaves would compete for jobs and wages
VII. Alternatives to emancipation were back to Africa movements
VIII. Very strong press arose, including religious press. One idea was the God would punish the US for continuing slavery
IX. 1835 using the steam press and stereotyping technologies for more efficient printing

William Lloyd Garrsion worked for Ben Lundy's The Genius of Universal Emancipation. But Garrison was opposed to GRADUAL EMANCIPATION. Supported immediate emancipation. Got Lundy paper closed down Founded the LIBERATOR in Boston in 1831. Continuously called for immediate emancipation

Nat Turners bloody rebellion was a setback. People tended to blame radical abolitionists.

Elijah Lovejoy- Tested Emancipation in the border states of Missiouri and Illinois

Established the OBSERVER in St. Louis, but had to flee to Alton, ILL. For anti-slaver and anti-Catholic views

Illinois dependent on SOUTHERN TRADE. Asked him to stop publishing

Mob destroyed his press and burned his home. Before the Mormons were persecuted in Navoo

Third press they burned him out and shot him. Nov. 7, 1837

Fredrick Douglass

Escaped slavery in 1837 and went to NYC. Half white and half black

Became a full-time abolitionist lecturer. Famous for speeches to Mass. Anti-Slavery society

Went on lecture circuit with William Lloyd Garrsion Electrified audiences

He went to Britain in 1845 on the lecture circuit. The British bought his freedom
