I was fresh out of pre-school and was fortunate to be admitted into one of our countries more illustrious school.. I remember the first days of school were filled with the ever familiar cries of 5, 6, and 7-year old kids who felt as though they’re parents had abandoned them each time they’re dropped of at school and the parents wouldn’t be there to wait for them until dismissal. I remember well; I was one of them.

I don’t really remember how I made friends back then, It just happened, one minute your strangers the next your picking each other up from having fallen down somewhere in the playgrounds. At dismissal you’d get to meet the parents of your new friends. It’s a nice feeling. They always seem to give out the impression that you’re welcome to tag along home and be part of their family should you grow out of your old one. And then next day everyone would be trading lunches with each other, either that or everyone would be packing with lunch for well, everyone, from each of the parents.

The environment was very comfortable and welcoming. Everyone one was so friendly and generous about everything - Almost.

No matter how generous a kid was, there’ll always be something he wasn’t willing to share. And for most kids, Toys would be at the top of their ‘may not share’ list.

Despite having found my self among the well-off, soon to be elitista’s of society. It still doesn’t soften the fact that I come from a financially struggling background. I was rarely able to share any packed lunches because I only had enough for myself. And if the opportunity to share or trade was there, either they weren’t interested with the meager meal I carried, or I was too shy to show what I had in the first place. It was typical, I guess. Being in that scenario, amongst the wealthy, who was I? I was already aware of that at such a young age. I shouldn’t have been.

Of course, it’s inevitable, the time did come when kids were taking their toys over and showing...
