The Greenhouse Effect: A threat to our Future?

Uganda is feeling the effect of Global Warming. Uganda’s CO2 emission consists of 92% liquid fuels and 8% cement manufacturing. The CO2 emissions per capita in 2003 were 0.06 kt in comparison to the United States at 19.95.
We are seeing huge changes in weather and the physical characteristics of the country, not only has the temperature gone up but there are frequent and severe droughts.   The drought periods have occurred because of less rainfall but have endured more storms which have caused flooding, landslides and soil erosion.   This is causing periods in the year when the water table is low which results in enormous problems with electricity. It is becoming very unpredictable and supply is now coming from diesel generation. Uganda is very poor and climate change is making it impossible to overcome the struggling population. Our biggest export is greatly affected. Coffee makes up 80% of our exports and is hard to grow because of the change in the weather and the increase in new pests. Being in a poverty stricken country we have found that the lack of basic need and huge climate change has resulted in a downward spiral. Disease is spreading and malaria has gone up in the last few years.   Malaria has reached epidemic proportions in the south. Gorillas and leopards are also feeling the effects because of the melting ice caps.  
Uganda is a part of the Kyoto Protocol and has made policies and outlines for the country to follow. In 2002 the government created an energy policy outlining the commitment to developing and using renewable energy. The policy focuses on solar energy and biofuels and its goal is to boost the use of renewable energy from 4% to 61% of total consumption by 2017.
