1896 – The Year Of Change?

America is at a time of financial distress. The issues concerning the people of America are critical to winning the election. Issues such as tariff, Free Silver, and the gold standard are pushing the votes. At a time of economic peril, this election proves to be important in securing the nation’s social and economical future. Similar to the election of today, the Election of 1896 is based on the thing that matters most to people, money. In any election, no matter whether a candidate cares about racial equality, starving babies, abortions, and so on, the only thing of dire importance to the people, the voter, is whether he/she is in the red or the green. Money is the basis in which all things are possible. This sole fact is the reason behind my support of the claim ““The 1896 Election was one of the most important elections in US history in terms of social and economic matters”. There is no society without money, no government, no representatives, no anything. That is why any election held during a time of economic despair is considered important. It is not a matter whether or not petty social issues are addressed; it is the issues that affect the amount of money one has that controls an election and a president. Take for instance Abraham Lincoln; he was a man of sturdy moral values who believed slavery was unjust. Yet, there could be another side to this story. Though slavery was morally irresponsible, one could take the case that the cessation of the South was mainly due to the fact that the government wanted to tax slaves, and ultimately remove slavery, causing an economic ripple in the south. In addition, one could say Abe Lincoln wanted to free the slaves simply because southern farmers did not want them anymore. If a worker is beaten, starved, and not even paid, what is the motivation to work hard and collect the harvest? None. The 1896 Election boasted several issues of economic importance.
