TLC Analysis of Analgesic Drugs #11

The purpose of this lab was to learn techniques 19 column chromatography sections 19.1-19.3 and technique 20 thin layer chromatography and to analysis analgesic drugs with thin layer chromatography, which showed all the different chemicals in the drugs.
Needed to make 12 capillary micropipettes to have small enough capillaries to spot solutions. Handle the TLC paper with care to prevent oils from your hands to get on the paper. Making the spots small prevent the spots from going in the paths of the other spots on the TLC paper. The TLC paper is placed in the developing chamber to allow the spots to develop. Then they are placed under a UV lamp to observe the spots that formed on the TLC paper. Then in millimeters the spots are measured relative to the solvent front. The iodine analysis is not preformed until after all the UV comparison is complete.
A major deviation was not being able to make the capillary micropipettes.
With spot plat 1, in acetaminophen there are two compounds the second being more polar than the first, the first compound has an Rf of 0.65mm and the second compound has an Rf of 0.90mm and both of the compounds the iodine showed the spots. The ibuprofen had only one compound with an Rf of 0.91mm and the iodine made no appearance with any of the compounds. The third, Aspirin also has two compounds with the first Rf of 0.85mm and the second with Rf 0.96mm and the iodine showed nothing. then the forth, salicylamide has one compound with an Rf of 0.81mm and the iodine also showed nothing. the fifth, caffeine also has only one compound with an Rf of 0.19mm and the iodine showed nothing with this compound. The sixth spot was the unknown reference spot that contained caffeine, acetaminophen compound one, and salicylamide and the iodine showed a spot with compounds 2 and 3. Spot plate 2 contained all unknowns. Spot A had three compounds that had a Rf of 0.20mm that’s caffeine...
