English 1106

Final Reflection Journal I have learned a lot in English 1106. The many readings, writing, and discussions helped me understand the main goals of the course, which include developing arguments on positions, researching tops and developing a thesis, and conduct field research in a variety of ways. These various goals helped contribute to a better understanding of the course theme, which weighs heavily on culture. We worked to understand how family life, friends, and environments helped influence culture. Many readings helped me understand how culture can be influenced across the world, including “Case Studies: Global Issues.” This article helped explain that the development of technology has influenced globalization of the world and changed culture on a wider scale. Something that affects one part of the world now affects a complete different place on another side of the world. This article helped influence my opinion for the contextualized analysis paper, which may be the assignment that was mostly related to the theme of the class. It helped me learn that culture is not just influenced by the people and environment you are around. Globalization is both helping and hurting culture. It makes communication easier and helps bridge the culture gap, but it also creates an identity crisis. People are becoming more similar to the point where culture seems to be dying out. In addition to my understanding of the theme of this class, I also learned a lot about myself as a writer. I learned that I can take a broad concept, such as the fieldwork research paper, and make it into my own. We were supposed to write about our experiences so far in college and how we (or a particular group) fit in. This assignment helped me realize how easy it is to write about your own experiences. When you are writing about your own story, the writing flows much better. Overall, I believe that I have become a much better writer through my time in this course. I have written many different types of pieces, such as journals, and the contextualized analysis paper, film review, and a fieldwork research paper. I helped gain a better understanding of where my strengths and weaknesses lie. I have had to both analyze my environment and analyze pieces given to me in order to write about the deeper meaning of the cultural part of the world. Doing so, I have bettered myself as a writer and as a person.

I believe that the major objective of English 111 is to practice different substantial skills that will help you increase your writing abilities. These skills will prepare students when they’re expressing thoughts, feelings, viewpoints, and information orally or on paper. In my opinion, the most important central concept communicated in the syllabus is the Course Schedule. I will constantly be marking off the assignments that I have already completed so that I know which ones I have left to complete. It’s extremely important to be well organized and to always keep up with when the work is due. If you get too far behind, it’ll end up being too much work to catch up on. Being proficient is key to success in this class. The only question that…

There are millions of cultures all over the world that change the way people are perceived. Culture is a large part of how people view the world and how the world views people of a certain culture. Differences in culture can be viewed in multiple short stories, and excerpts from novels. The authors of “An Indian Father’s Plea”, “Where Worlds Collide”, and “Everyday Use” use culture to show how people can react to others based on their way of life. Culture can create conflict between people and cause differences in how certain groups perceive each other.…

To begin, a memorable experience that sticks out is one of the first days of class. We began talking about how we will also be using a second textbook. Soon after the class began discussing definitions of advocacy. Personally, I could not come up with many definitions and seeing the variety of results the class produced not only showed me how much I can learn from others, but also showed me how writing can include advocacy. I had never thought of the presence of advocacy in writing, therefore that specific class period was eye opening. To hear how writing sends a specific message to an audience while simultaneously using different rhetorical techniques to help further that message was a great introduction to what the course would be discussing.…

Danny and I are best friends. We socialize with people from the Hasidic synagogue or else he will be similar to them. I don’t want my father around me when I am with Danny, but he never leaves.…

Culture and ethnicity have become major influences on the interactional styles and structure of families and even workplaces. People from diverse cultures interact with one another as well as share ideas, so attention has to be given to culture. Individuals need to understand their own cultural background, which may act as a basis of understanding others too. Culture can simply be defined as a group that shapes a person’s values and identity. Culture identities stems from the following differences: race, gender, ethnicity, country of origin, religion, physical ability and geographical region (Blum, 1999).…

This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…
