Teaching Elementary School

Lesson Plan 9/Reflection #9
SCIE 376

This week at Essex Elementary school I taught a review lesson to my students. I believe the lesson went well because the students were engaged, participating, and became confident on past topics taught the previous weeks. I started off the lesson with solving Jasmine’s mystery, which I believe was really beneficial. The past couple of weeks focused on Jasmine and her mystery so I believe it was important to solve the mystery in order to close that lesson. I required students to write a bulleted list of evidence and then a short summary of who and how Jasmine can accuse. The students then shared their summaries. I believe this went well because the students were very enthusiastic about solving the mystery.
Next, I decided to review the topics of matter, properties of matter, and physical and chemical properties. In order to review these topics I decided to have the students participate in new activities to keep them interested and engaged. I showed the students three different balloons. One balloon was frozen with water, one balloon was filled with water, and one balloon was filled with baking soda and put on top of a water bottle with vinegar. This part of the lesson also went very well because the students were able to identify the properties of matter and physical properties of each balloon. The last activity of the lesson was making coke floats. I believe this was the most successful part of the lesson because the students became very excited and engaged but also learned a lot from this activity. I decided to pour the soda into each student’s cup one a time, so the students were able to see the changes close up. The students were very interested and surprised by the changes in their cup and were able to identify the solid, liquid, and gas in the coke float easily, which was the main focus of the activity.
Overall, this was not one of my favorite lessons to teach. Since it was a review I felt like the lesson was unorganized and confusing. I did not feel as confident about the lesson compared to previous lessons, which I believe has a huge correlation to how the lesson goes. I believe what did not go well was that the lesson was very slow and the students started to get bored and distracted. I was constantly trying to keep students focused in between activities and thinking of ways to motivate students to continue working because there was a lot of writing within this lesson. If I were to teach this lesson again, I would definitely make some changes to improve the lesson. I would change the properties of matter activity to make it more interesting to the students and an activity that takes up more time. I would also require less writing in the lesson and more discussion if I taught this again because the students got easily distracted and bored when they were required to write responses in their notebooks.
This has been the ninth lesson taught this semester and I have definitely learned a lot about myself as a science teacher. While teaching lesson 9, I have learned the importance of preparation. I made sure to test all of the activities beforehand to know exactly how each worked and how much time each activity took. I have also learned how to make changes when necessary while teaching in order to improve the lesson and specific questions to ask students to keep them motivated, thinking, and learning. This has only been the 9th science lesson I have taught so there is still area of improvement. I believe as a science teacher I can improve with becoming even more confident on the science topics I am teaching. It is important to understand and be confident on the science you are teaching to your students if you want them to understand and believe you.

I disagree with Leon Botstein's essay "Let Teenagers Try Adulthood". Botstein argues that teenagers have matured much more quickly over the past few years. Therefore, he believes high school be abolished and a child's education should begin earlier in order for students to graduate around the age of sixteen rather than eighteen. High school is intended for students of a certain maturity level. But now, students are exceeding that level rapidly. Botstein sees high school as a place full of superficial, adolescent teenagers that care more about appearances, popularity, cliques and sports than education. Because they have reached a high maturity level at such a young age already, there are many students that are wasting their junior and senior years away in high school rather than starting college. I disagree with Botstein however. High school is a transition period for students to learn how to take on more responsibilities. It is the time for teenagers to become more social and independent. While I do agree with Botstein on his point of maturity levels growing faster, I don't agree that students should be graduating earlier than they currently are. Not all students are capable of the same things. Most high school students are not prepared to enter into adulthood just yet. They still need someone to guide them along a path until they've graduated. Age restrictions are applied to the youth community for a reason. The majority of teenagers are not ready to handle the responsibilities that come their way. The legal age for drinking is 21 because of safety concerns as well as the responsibility that comes with the consumption of alcohol. Fortunately for Texas, teenagers are able to obtain their drivers license at the age of sixteen, but other states, like California, have citizens wait until they are eighteen to obtain their license with the same privileges as a sixteen year old from Texas. Responsibilities are tough to handle, even for an adult. So why have the same…

Blue’s class she reminded them of the Bill Nye video that they had watch, and the kids remember lots of things from the video. This was a great way to get the students engaged and to help with a visual representation. She also gave each of them a chance to explain their reason and definitions with the whole class. She kept the students engaged by having them all take turns reading and highlight as they went along. Her role was to present questions for the students, who were to think about the answer and then share with one another. It was a good idea to spilt the students in to partners to discuss. In Mr. G’s he explained that the students had only been giving him work that was about fifty percent effort. He did allow for students to take out there phone and take pictures of the board to make sure they had the information. They also were very good at reading along with him and answering his questions out of the book. I think it was a good idea to get the students more engaged in the learning process, by working in smaller groups together. These are both great examples of their responsibility as a teacher to create good creative and instructive…

Next, I gave the students an opportunity to participate in the lesson. I held up picture flashcards that had different objects on them. The students had to raise their hands and tell me what the object was and the letter blend for that object. I repeated this process until each student in the class had a chance to participate. Once we finished, I answered any questions or concerns the student had. I noticed that the students were actively engaged in the lesson and seemed to have really enjoyed. Most of all they seemed to have understood the lesson with ease.…
